The actor, who has a cameo in the first film, will take a prominent role alongside Eddie Redmayne in the second in JK Rowling’s Potterverse franchise.

According to Deadline, Johnny Depp is joining Eddie Redmayne and the cast for the second installment of the franchise. While his exact role remains top-secret for now, all signs point to the actor joining Zoë Kravitz and more stars once the sequel hits theatres in 2018. They also hint that you may spot the actor in the first installment when it hits theaters November 18.

The movies focus on the adventures of “magizoologist” Newt Scamander, the author of the book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which is prescribed reading for students at Hogwarts, the school attended by Harry Potter in JK Rowling’s books. The first film follows the events that unfold when some magical creatures are inadvertently released in 1920s New York.

David Yates will be taking the helm of the sequel, which starts filming next year with Eddie Redmayne reprising his role of Newt Scamander.

Depp's other future films include Murder on the Orient Express, Labyrinth (wherein he plays the LAPD detective investigate the murder of Biggie Smalls), and The Invisible Man, which is part of Universal's shared universe based around reimaginings of their classic monsters.

However, as Depp was accused of domestic violence during a recent bitter divorce battle with Amber Heard, many Potterheads did not appreciate the decision. Several fans took to Twitter to personally message the movie franchise's official account as well as author of the original novels JK Rowling to express their distaste.

One user named @wednesdaydreams wrote: 'hello @jk_rowling @FantasticBeasts the Harry Potter universe is all about being against the abuse of power and yet you cast a known abuser?'

Another microblogger @annalikestweets wrote: 'hey @jk_rowling many harry potter fans are survivors, and this hurts them so much!'

Several even pointed out the double standards in showbiz and complained about Depp continuing on with a successful career.

User @amberhearrds commented: 'Winona Ryder stole something once and her career plummeted. Johnny Depp abused his wife & he continues to get roles. i love double standards'
